Question 1

Evaluation Question 1 - In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop or Challenge Forms and Conventions of Real Media Products?

CONVENTIONS

Here I have made a table showing pop conventions and if I have used them in my music video and ancillary texts. I have used most of the conventions in my video meaning I have conformed and that my video will be accepted into this genre.

MY MEDIA PRODUCTS

REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS

MY INSPIRATIONS/SHOT TYPES

For my music video I took inspiration from Adele 'Someone like you' because its a sad love song and I thought that the connotations of black and white convey a sad meaning in contrast to bright colours which would convey happiness. I took inspiration from the shot types as well, the side profile I thought conveys sadness because there is no eye contact with the camera (the audience) I also think that another popular convention when it comes to love songs is either walking away or towards the camera which is what I did in my video.

MAKEUP AND HAIR CONVENTIONS

This is the hair and makeup I decided for my artist. After researching pop artists and looking at their hair and makeup I realised that to be noticed and 'popular' in the industry you need to stand out and look different. So I talked with my model and asked if we could do something different with her hair and makeup to conform to female artist conventions in the pop industry. I looked at artists such as Katy Perry and Rihanna for inspiration as they are known for being bold and daring with fashion choices.

LIIAR ANALYSIS INCLUDING LAURA MULVEYS MALE GAZE THEORY

L- The narrative to my music video shows a girl chasing the love of her life because he promises her everything but gives her nothing, so for the narrative  I decided to show the girl with a note but we don't get to see what it says till the very end of the video so we are left in suspense, during the video we see the girl go to his house and knock on the door but he doesn't answer. The mise en scene in this video shows a big manner house, a bedroom and the woods. This mise en scene is conventional of a love story music video. The edits in this video are too the beat which is also a conventional feature of music videos.

I-In this music video the ideology is of love but also rejection. The ideology behind this narrative is that she loves him but he isn't returning the same love, we can see this through the mise en scene in the video where she has a ring on saying 'I love you' but it means nothing because he isn't answering his door to her anymore and all he can give to her is a note saying 'im sorry'

I-In terms of the institution my artist would be signed to a record label such as Sony's subsidiary label Syco owned by Simon Cowell because she is a young pop artist and fits to the way this label work.

A-The target audience for this video are fans of pop music and people who can relate to the video and lyrics, mostly teenage/ young adult girls.
If people can relate to what is being shown then there will be a bigger audience because teenage girls like when they can relate to a certain artist or have someone they can look up to in terms of personality and style.

R-The representation of this video is of love, it is very passionate and is targeted at people who have gone through similar emotions. The artist in this video is represented in a way where you feel sympathy towards her. Laura Mulvey's male gaze theory looks at the way women are viewed in music videos and in other media texts. This long shot shows a full length shot  of the girl, which conventionally on music videos is to show off a woman's body. This is normally found in rap videos but is now a convention in most (if not all) genres of music.

Question 2

Evaluation Question 2 - How Effective Is The Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?

EXISTING PRODUCTS

By looking at existing products this helped me to analyse the conventions used so I could conform to these conventions in my own products and create a promotional package.

This Lana Del Rey advert has the artist name at the top of the advert because this is the first thing you see when you look at the advert.
Another convention is the album name which is featured just below the middle of the advert, this is in a smaller font which is a convention I used on my poster.
Below the album name is the sell lines, these include the date of release to tell people when the album is out. Also, hit singles are featured on the advert so that people who have heard the songs and like them can buy the album.
At the bottom of the advert is
the artists website so that people can go onto social media to find out the information they need.
Amazon.com is another website included on the advert, this is so people know where they can buy the album.
The image used on this album is a medium close up and creates continuity with the album cover which is also the same photo.

Both, the advert and album cover have continuity features that they both look the same in the fact the same image is used, the same font and colour scheme. This promotional package fit together and is effective because they look the same so whether people see the advert or the album or both, the picture will remain with them and they will remember what it looks like.

Question 3

Evaluation Question 3- What have you learned from your audience feedback?

ANCILLARY TEXT FEEDBACK

When I did my first ancillary text draft I made a questionnaire about both the album advert and the digipack on areas I thought I could improve, I then turned this data into pie charts so I could find out which were the most popular areas of improvement.

For my digipack most people said that I should take my professional looking images and plan a shoot, Including hair and makeup. They also said that I should  change the colour scheme of my digipack, I agree with this and think that I should make the colour scheme less 'girly' so it appeals to a wider audience.

For my album advert the most popular for how I should improve was that I should change the main image and next was that I should spread the text out on the page because it was too close together and confused my audience.

 MUSIC VIDEO FEEDBACK

I asked four questions to a 17year old girl about my music video and what she thought about it.

The questions were:
  • what genre is my music video?
  • is my video abstract, narrative or performance?
  • what editing techniques were used?
  • is my video continuous from my ancillary texts?
  • From this feedback I learnt that my music video does fit into the pop genre due to the costume/clothes and the narrative aspect as well as lip sync and performance.
  • The video comes across as narrative because the story line goes along well with the lyrics and they match.
  • The editing techniques I used were good, I was able to lip sync, use slow motion when necessary and use transition filters.
  • My promotional package is continuous because I did the photo shoot on the same day that I filmed so the hair and makeup looked the same in the video as well as on the digipack and advert.

MY QUESTIONNAIRE ABOUT MY MUSIC VIDEO

Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

This is a step by step process of what I did on photo shop to make my album advert draft.

First, I opened the photo I wanted to have as my poster image onto photoshop.

I changed the levels on my photo to make it looks sharper and brighter and more appealing to look at.

Then I got a photo of ripped paper to add as a background for the album name.

Then I added the album name 'Figure 8' ontop of the ripped paper, I found the font on 'dafont.com'.

Next, I used 'dafont.com' again for my artists logo 'Victoria' I put the logo above all other writing so its the first thing people will look at and theorefore know who's the album is.

Then in the bottom right corner I added the artists website for further information on the album relsease, I found this a common album poster convention.

I added the text 'debut album'.

Next, I added the record labels logo to the bottom left corner.

And finally I included what songs were found on this album for extra information and to let the audience know that these singles that have already been relseased will be on this album.
